High-SMAS lift / facelift is a facial rejuvenation procedure that improves the aged skin and tissues by lifting and fixing the skin, tissues, and facial muscles.
When aging occurs, not only the skin, but the fat, muscle, and SMAS layers also droops down. Therefore, the conventional facelift does not last long as this method tightens only the skin flap without considering the SMAS layer, as well as leaving large incision scarring after the recovery period.
What is a SMAS layer?
SMAS (or Superficial Musculo-aponeurotic System) is a special layer, often called as muscles of facial expression, which connects and holds the facial skin and muscles together.
Layers of skin tissue:
Epidermis – the outside layer of skin
Dermis – the inner layer of skin
Sucutaneous tissue layer
Limit of conventional SMAS lift
SMAS layer has to be peeled with the skin for an effective facelift result. However, the general SMAS facelift lacked technique and could not improve the zygoma and temple area. This was due to the possible damage of the facial nerves. As a result, only the droopy skin of the lower facial area improved, leaving the mid-face area causing the imbalanced facial proportion.
The benefit of High-SMAS lift
High-SMAS lift was developed to improve the problems from the general facelift methods. This method safely exfoliates and lifts up the skin and SMAS layer from the chin line to upper zygoma. Consequently, your face will look very natural and youthful after the surgery.
Incision of Conventional SMAS lifting and High SMAS lifting
Only the experienced and well-acknowledged plastic surgeon should perform High-SMAS lift, as it is one of the rhytidectomy methods that requires high level of surgical skill.
1. The skin from jawline to above zygoma (cheek bone) near temples will be evenly tightened and lifted up.
2. The loosen skin tissues around the ear areas will be separated from the suture and fixation point to minimize the ear deformation.
The loosen skin tissues and SMAS layer will be separated from the facial expression muscles, and fixed on to the deep temporal fascia to attain the rejuvenation. The tissues around the ear areas will be separated from the suture and fixation point to minimize the ear deformation.
3. The incision will be sutured without excessive tension on the skin for less scarring.
