Frequently asked questions on Eyelid Surgery

Here are some frequently asked questions we get for eyelid surgery. Please go over carefully and if you have more inquiries or want to have online consultation, you can always e-mail us at vipps@vipps.kr :).

1. What is blepharoplasty? Is it same as ptosis correction surgery (blepharoptosis)?

Blepharoplasty can refer to upper and lower eyelids, and is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat  to enhance the look of eyelids. Ptosis correction is to correct the weak development of upper eyelid elevating muscles and create double eyelid fold together.

2. Why can’t the doctor suggest non-incision for me? Is non-incision permanent?

Non-incision is suitable for patient who has thin upper eyelid skin without ptosis symptom. Unless the upper eyelid muscle is weak, the result is permanent. However, there may be loss of fold with non-incision method for patients who have thick skin and weak upper eyelid muscles (ptosis).

3. Will there be much scarring after incisional method of blepharoplasty?

The scarring can be expected for incision blepharoplasty, but it is very minimal and almost inconspicuous after about 6 months or so.

4. Does the surgery hurt?

No, the surgery is done under anesthesia so you will not feel any pain during the surgery. There may be slight discomfort after the surgery such as tightness or dryness, which will get gradually better.

5. How long does the swelling take after the eyelid surgery? How long does it take to look natural?

This is the question we always get from the patients after the eyelid surgery. Although we cannot tell exactly how many days or months it may take for the full recovery (because everyone has different condition), the immediate swelling usually takes about 2-3 weeks to subside. During the recovery, your eyes may look awkward for the first few months, waking up with different sizes of crease everyday. One side of your double eyelid crease may look bigger or smaller than the other side which is completely normal during the healing process. After about 1-2 months, the result looks more natural, and the final recovery/result may take up to 6 months or more.

6. What kind of anesthesia is used for eyelid surgery?

For upper eyelid surgeries, local anesthesia is used. For lower eyelid surgery and sub-brow lift, light sedation will be used.

7. When can I wash my face?

Patient should not wash face with water until stitches are removed which is about 4th day from the surgery.

8. When can I start to eye make-up or wear contact lenses?

Patient should avoid eye make-up or wearing contact lenses right after the surgery.

Patient may start wearing contact lenses after about 1 week and start putting up make up after the incision area is healed which takes about 2 weeks.

9. How long do I have to stay in Korea for eyelid surgery?
You will have to stay in Korea for minimum of 4-5 days for eyelid surgery.
