Double Chin Surgery: All You Need to Know

Common Causes of a Double Chin

A double chin occurs when a layer of fat around your neck sags. It appears as if you have two chins and sometimes can look like a person is chubby. There are many common causes of a double chin:

  • Genetics: Sometimes, genes are responsible for your double chin. If someone in your family has a double chin, you may be more prone to having one.
  • Age:  As we naturally age, a double chin may appear. Because we lose our skin elasticity and our facial muscles tend to lose its firmness and elasticity. As a result, the skin on the neck starts to sag which causes the double chin.
  • Weight gain: Some overweight people develop a double chin due to their diet. If you eat a diet that is full of processed foods and is rich in carbohydrates, the chance of you having a double chin is high.
  • Posture: If you have bad posture, it can weaken muscles around the neck and the chin.

Double Chin Surgery Options

We have a few surgical options that will address your double chin issue:

  • Lipolysis & Tightening Laser :

    • We utilize laser lipolysis, a minimally invasive method, to remove excess fat and to tighten loose skin. Our V-Line laser is great because it has a short recovery time and gives effective firming of loose skin. The procedure is very simple as our doctor uses local anesthesia to numb the chin. The laser attacks the fat cells that need to be removed and converts it into liquid form. The fat will be released through the lymphatic veins.
      • We recommend that you wear a chin strap for a couple of weeks to aid with the tightening of this area. Your final results will be seen in approximately 3 months.
  • Advanced Genioplasty:

    • A more invasive solution for a double chin is advanced genioplasty. This method is suitable for those who have a weak or receding chin or a double chin caused by the short length of the chin. Our doctor will cut a piece of your chin and will move it forward. This method literally reshapes the chin and improves the soft tissue drape of the neck. Ideal candidates for this surgery are those who have receding or protruding chin and a normal bite.
      • The recovery time for advanced genioplasty is approximately 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Necklift :

    • A doctor can also perform a neck lift to fix a double chin. When we age, the skin on the neck sags down which causes a double chin. At our clinic, our doctor peels the SMAS layer on your face, up to the jawline and bottom of the ears. This method is one of the most difficult ones to master as it requires a doctor who is an expert with this. If an inexperienced doctor performs this method, it can be detrimental to the patient. The patient can end up having unnatural results or excessive scarring. Our neck lift procedure leaves the patient with no scarring.
      • Recovery time for a necklift is between 1-2 weeks.

Ultimately, the choice for double chin surgery will depend on your consultation and how serious your issue is. For more information about our chin surgery options, go here
