Many women cherish flawless, supple skin and would do anything to get it. Korean women are known for this type of skin and for their seemingly exhaustive steps to achieve “perfect” skin. So, what is their secret to getting this kind of skin?
Here is part 1 of our 4-part series on 15 Effective Korean Beauty Secrets.
1. 10-Second Rule
An important tip to ensure penetration of your products is to apply products within 10 seconds of each other. This is different from the western beauty standard that says when layering products wait 10 minutes between each one. According to Shape Magazine, “After you take a hot shower, you’re supposed to apply your toner within 10 seconds,” says Kim. The longer you wait, the more dehydrated your skin becomes. So, the faster you can lock in that moisture and keep your skin protected, the better. (Ideally, you’d keep it in the shower with you, she says.) If you’re at the gym and don’t have a toner with you, the same goes for your moisturizer. “
2. Double Cleansing
Korean women generally double cleanse which means that they use two types of cleansers; an oil cleanser and a liquid or foaming face wash. StyleCraze notes that Korean women pre-cleanse and re-cleanse. “The first step is to remove the makeup and traces of oil using a liquid cleanser. Then, apply cleansing oil to remove bacteria, sebum, and other impurities. After cleansing, thoroughly with lukewarm water.”
The second step ,re-cleanse is vital. “Koreans consider cleansing as the key to a radiant skin. Clean the pre-cleansed skin with a mild foaming cleanser by applying it in a circular motion with the help of your fingertips.”
3. Facial Massage
Korean women use facial massage as in important part of their anti-aging arsenal. “By using your knuckles or fingertips to massage the muscles and tissue under your skin, you’ll increase blood circulation and get the oxygen flowing through your face, which in turn will keep your skin glowing and radiant. Massaging daily also helps to firm and tone your facial muscles to help fight wrinkles and prevent the skin from aging over time. “It’s a must-do. It’s not even considered anything special in Korea”
Ginseng is an important staple in Korea and has been for a very long time. It’s anti-aging properties and detoxification effects helps your skin get rid of pollutants and is a great antioxidant. One can either ingest ginseng through ginseng-based foods, teas or apply topically via various Korean beauty products.
5. Rice Water as a Toner
5. Rice Water as a Toner
In Korea, rice is not just meant to eat but also serves as a toner. “It’s a natural moisturizer that helps slow aging, reduce dark circles, fade age spots, and brighten skin,” says Kim. If you have rice in your kitchen, simply let it soak for about 10-15 minutes, swirl it around, and then use that milky water as a pseudo-toner.
